and you are it!
SYNOPSIS
And You Are It! is about Robin, a 23 year old girl, coming of age… again. The story centers around her relationship with Danny and friendship with Lily, both of which seem to be falling apart despite her best efforts. Act 1 captures the raw feeling of the fears, real or imagined, that consume our minds when we are most emotionally exhausted. Robin is in a state of hitting countless walls as she tries to cling to those most important to her. But she isn’t the only one struggling. It's revealed that for Danny and Lily the right words and timing are hard to find and misunderstandings are bound to cause great divides. In Act 2, the three of them put on the performance of a lifetime at their friend’s wedding, fighting through fake smiles and small talk to see if they are truly alone in their feelings. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Does it matter at all? It all depends on how you see it.

character breakdown
ROBIN - (F, early 20’s, mezzo/alto) - eager for stability, an advocate for everyone but herself, external processor
DANNY - (M, early 20’s, baritone) - tender, aloof, nauseatingly calm, struggling with depression in a way he’s never felt before, internal processor
LILY - (F, early 20’s, mezzo soprano) - endearing, hopeful, hopes for the best in people, good comedic timing MAYA (F, early 20’s, alto) - realistic, comforting, tough love kind of friend
JAMIE - (M, early 20’s, tenor) - goofy but genuinely so kind, thoughtful, not stupid but will act stupid if it will make you smile
NATE - (M, early 20’s, tenor) - charming, makes you feel like the only one in the room, selfish, performative, reveals himself to be a narcissist. Played by the actor of JAMIE.
OTHERS - actors of JAMIE and MAYA play multiple characters at the wedding in Act 2 and are encouraged to make them as animated and larger than life as possible.
Why this show?
"And You Are It" is an original musical created by Maddie Athearn and Jack Kellum. We premiered the first performances on April 16th and 17th 2025 after a workshop in December 2024. The music of And You Are It can be described as jazzy, nostalgic, contemporary, cinematic, with poignant themes that speak when the characters can't. I would describe the style of the work as a whole as "slice of life theatre" striving to evoke compassion from the audience as the characters strive to understand each other. This show is intimate and deeply rooted in the importance of true friendship and community. Everyone has three words they’re holding back or have never been asked. If one person walks out of your theatre thinking, “Maybe I should check in on my friend.” You have done your job.
